Supporting Sustainability in Mountain Regions: Experiences and Perspectives from the UIAA's Mountain Protection Award

The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) actively supports and encourages initiatives that address both sustainable development in mountains, for example by recognising these initiatives via its flagship project, the UIAA Mountain Protection Award (UIAA MPA). In this talk, the UIAA Mountain Protection Commission will discuss perspectives on sustainable tourism practices and lessons learnt from the UIAA MPA relevant for sustainability.
Dr Carolina Adler is an Environmental Scientist and Geographer, working as Research Fellow and Lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland. Given her expertise in environmental issues and active role in the conservation of mountain regions, she was invited to join the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA)'s Mountain Protection Committee in 2012 and to assist in the development of their flagship project, the UIAA Mountain Protection Award.
